THE GCRC CAMPUS

The hallmark of the BUSM General Clinical Research Center is the close proximity of the major components: Medical School, Boston Medical Center Hospital, Dental School and the School of Public Health. Together they comprise the Boston University Medical Center (BUMC). All are within six blocks of each other. This facilitates the implementation of research for both the patient and the investigator.

The physical resource of the General Clinical Research Center, the medical outpatient unit, is 10,000 square feet, renovated in 1998, and located on the eighth floor of the Evans building of the Boston University Medical Center. It is centrally located and services the two main pavilions of the Hospital: East Newton and Harrison. It is part of the East Newton Pavilion and utilizes all the physical facilities therein. Unless precluded by patient care issues, the designated areas for Center inpatient activity, will be 7 North and 7 East of the East Newton Pavilion. The BMC nursing staff work with our research nurses to implement the standard care part of the protocol. Our nurses serve the research needs of both inpatient and outpatients.

The Hospital is contiguous with the GCRC. Boston Medical Center is a private, not for profit, 547- licensed bed academic medical center located in Boston’s historic South End. The hospital is the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine. Emphasizing community-based care, Boston Medical Center with its mission to provide consistently accessible health services to all, is the largest safety net hospital in New England.

The Dental School Clinical Research Center, built in 1995, is one block east of the medical GCRC outpatient unit. It is located in the Goldman School of Dental Medicine on the first floor. The Center occupies 1200 square feet and within it are three rooms designated for research. It was built to undertake pharmaceutical based research and will now also serve investigators with peer reviewed research. The rooms are fully equipped dental suites with x-ray equipment. The center has office space, a reception desk, and waiting room. Patients are easily able to visit both the dental and medical research center for a combined visit.

The School of Public Health is the site of the biostatistics and informatics core. In the Talbot building, which is across from the GCRC, is the biostatistics component. The Data Coordinating Center (DCC), where the Informatics component resides, is located at 580 Harrison Avenue, 2nd floor. The DCC occupies about 5,000 square feet of office and equipment space.
